Media - Music video shoot / 2

Yesterday we shoot the band sequence, we are still going with the sillhote style. To do this tho we places our three band members, george, kirsty and ross, against a white background. As none of them was wearing white we can select the colour and wipe it out in final cut pro. We had a little problem that they didnt really know the song, we did play it to the before we shoot but the song has an awarked beat. But we did say as long as you just move with the music then it dosent really matter what you sing as it will be sillhoted.

Looking at the genre.

It was hard to narrow down what genre The Crimson Cucumbers are so i did some research into passion pit to understand where they stand in the music buisness.

There genreisto be Electronica, alternative dance and Wonky Pop...... ( meaning)

Electronica
The term was used uinb the United states in the early 1990s with regards to post-rave global-infuluenced electronic dance music

Altrernative dance
Also refers to as underground dance in the US, is a musical genre that mixes rock subgenres with electric dance music. Although largely confined to the British Isles, the genre has gained American and worldwide exposure through acts such as New Order in the 1980s.

Wonky Pop
Is a term used to describe to loose grouping of muscials acts that play wat the BBC calls "quirky, catchy and credible pop".

I really like the phrase "wonky pop" so i think i will use this as the genre for The Crimson Cucmbers

Music Video Analysis of similar genres

French Navy Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura is a indie pop band from scotland. I have loved this song for a over a year and never thought about the video, until looking into it for this project. I have got to say tho that myself im not as interested for music videos anymore, i still love to watch them but music is everywhere and especially online that im not that excited to see the video. In comparison to when i was younger and could wait to see the latest video of boyzone or westlife! but i think this is down to bands that are "indie" they don't look high finished or have lavish sets that are full of profile shots of the boy band boy doing some air grabs and turning away from the screen. They have a look thats all homely or based within one area. For example in Camera Obscura video they are performing in what looks like a home/flat. They are not in a white studio with fake lighting, indie look is for it to be natural and low budget. Also the band is shown not to sit on a stall and try and lipsynch , instead they let of this feel that there a completely into there music. Playing the instruments and the camer having no real focus on one member. The camera almost postions you so you are particapating in the performance. Camera Obsura video also swithches between the love story between the characters and the performance. Looking at the video as a whole i think it has similarites to our, whereas it has the band performance and the running story of the two characters.

Plain White T's -Hey There Delilah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ5f3VspUUQ
The same in which i said about Camera Obsura French Navy is that the band are performing in a flat. The main singer is playing is playing his instrument and rarley looks into the camera to do a performance, instead it us as an audience looking at him playing privatly. The style of the video is unusual, and i think this is what the indie style tries to do. To challange what is a music video, in Hey There Delilah the whole video is split into three squares so the whole video isnt shown as one. There is the song, the performance, storyline and the technique of the video.

Razorlight - In The Morning

Razorlight video is a performance but again it is not to the camera they look invovled and playing there instruments. What i really like about this video is the main male dancer it is the perfromance. Again it is not a high gloss video it looks like it is set in a local pub and they are just a small band playing.

I think the whole indie look of a video for them as performers to be understated. Not to be the center of attention in the video, if shown then they are playing the instruments and in depth with there music. The perfromance is normaly between a boy and a girl love story. There is a certain colour to the videos wheras there is dull or little colour. Throughout each video there is a colour theme.

Pitch

The date we presented the pitch fell on the monday after we filmed. Therefor we had a clear idea of how we wanted to present it. Here is some of the slides -

Few shots of the filming up london - Monday 26th

At the weekend we went to london southbank to film. We had our main person ( James Tripp). We varied our shots to close ups and wide shot, also the back drop to be different. It was an advantage in having it in photo animations as when we were out shooting we could see what we have done and how it came out easily. When we was out we were adding to the storyline. All along we did want a story to be with the girl and boy, however not a major storyline. Therefore we had them meeting at the beginning. Some ideas worked out well, and overall we did stick to the storyboard, and out of all my projects i have done to date having the storyboard was useful. However the a scene with the moving umbrella, worked well as stills but when piecing the story together it didnt seem to fit anymore.
We was luckly with the weather as it was sunny in some parts, when we got to the instrumental part there was a bit of cloud however we knew when come to editing that part we would add effects.
(here are some of the photos we took, un-editied)

animatic

Here is our aniamtic. I never understood the importance of them until this project. This was so much help in organising the video. As we had so many photos to organise and timing issue, this was a perfect way to understand the way it will look. And i think for the first time ever we actually stuck shot by shot to the animatic.

Music videos

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp1Dk7nzs7M the reeling

This is my favourite video from Passion Pit. I think most of our ideas came from the style of the video. It has a animation feel to it with the ripping of the paper to reveal the image underneath. This is by the original band of our song therefore if we did a video along the same style we would be sticking to the sound.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb9X5jMofEo strawberry swing

I love coldplay videos, i think every video has its own look which i love. Viva la Vida where it was like a painting and Strawberry swing with a cartoon look. I think they see there videos as arty aswell as they are not into the perfroming to camera look they want to put on a show.

Marketing an artist - Rueben J

Toward the beginning of this project we wanted to look into marketing an artist. We picked Rueben Jay, and was marketing him as a teen idol. We thought of ways that he could plug his singles on shows such as Johnathon Ross and Sunday Night Project. Also in girly magazines such as sugar and closer. Marketing him as a teen idol he would be involved in the whole social networking with facebook and myspace. This helped as understanding what is invovled in marketing a band.

Lyrics

Dear friend as you know
Your flowers are withering
Your mother's gone insane
Your leaves have drifted away
But the clouds aren't leering up
And I've come reveling
Burning incandescently
Like a bastard on the burning sea

Chorus

You're drifting like a fire
Buried deep beneath the water
You're pressing on your low low
Is stepping on my toes
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
Put down your sword and bow
Come lay with me on the ground

You competing like mud swings
Spastic and bodily
Whipping me into a storm
Shaking me down to the floor
But you run away from me
And you left me shimmering
Like diamond wedding rings
Spinning dizzily down on the floor

Chorus

You're drifting like a fire
Buried deep beneath the water
You're pressing on your low low
Is stepping on my toes
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
Put down your sword and bow
Come lay with me on the ground

instrumental break

Chorus

You're drifting like a fire
Buried deep beneath the water
You're pressing on your low low
Is stepping on my toes
Whose side are you on?
What side is this anyway?
Put down your sword and bow
Come lay with me on the ground

to do

Need to add ;
- song
- mood board
- storyboard

Story boarding..

Ideas and storyboards.

We are going to start the music video with our main guy walking in to an projection. The projection will be of the next scene and projected onto his t-shirt.

As our song is called Moths Wings its only natural we do something around moths. This was our original and main idea to let moths lead the direction of the video. A collection of moths will follow our main person and will bring colour to the video.

This was a tester i created on photo shop. As we are going with photo animation it has the advantage that we can use photo shop to individually edit the photos. However it is a very long process, in AS we done also done an animation were it was all hand drawn -I'm hoping that because we all ready have the main image it will be much quicker. Also we can learn from our mistakes. We were discussing ways that we can also involve the moths. We both had the idea of an umbrella as i it a sort of a hypnotic and draws you in. We would involve this with the city scene (below) and have someone within that scene with an umbrella which will lead into the next scenes. At the moment we are deciding whether to have this part photo animation or normal film.
This is the city, we are planning to have a cardboard cut out sort of like a pop up book for this certain part in the song where the music picks up. This is also alot of planning needed so we are going practice it first and if it causes alot of trouble we will scrap it. However i really want to do this.

More on The Crimson Cucumber...

In yesterdays lesson we looked more on our mood boards and the style in which we want it to be in. We have a lot of ideas at the moment and are aiming to do them all. The advantage we have is the song is over 4 minutes, so compared to all our latest films/filming that is a lot longer to have. Which will hopefully let us get all the styles/ ideas.

Will upload the mood board soon so can explain all the ideas.
one of the ideas came from the coldplay video- strawberry swing. I think coldplay have really good videos as don't stick the conventions or have a particular style- they like to be unique and different for every song.

14th September.. start of music videowork

Creation of band.

Im going to be working with Rebecca Hammond in this project.

Name of band - We had a bit of trouble thinking of the name and wasnt set on coming up with one today. However we did start to think about name and wanted something original and with an edge on it. Plucking names and putting together was just a silly way to start- but it came up with some good names. One we like was The Crimson Cucumbers. We are going to go ahead and stick to it.

The Crimson Cucumbers - 3 members - one main singer who is male. Two musicians- girl on keyboard, male on drums.

Back story- Meet in a uni, started with open mic nights. Got a small fan base which grew through the use of Myspace. Word got to an independant record label where they produced there first 2 singles.

Ideology- Dont agree with manafactured mainstreampop. Likes to be independant and unique band. Their main audience is late teens/ 20s. There a laid back attiude band and have an interest in Art and Music world.

Look- Smart/casual. Girls dress in insentric and quirky.

Record label - island records

Monday 31 August 2009

Record company

http://www.islandrecords.co.uk/index.php

We choose on island records to be our record label. This is because in AS we did alot of research around the company and liked there values. Also we felt that our band would sit alongside all the other acts in the company.

500 word analysis of a music video

Case study - Take That

Looking at Take That from the time period 1990's to the present day.

Take That formed in 1990's as a five person band, Gary Barlow, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange. They sold more than 25 million records between 1991-96 and dominated the UK charts in the early 1990's. Take That won two best selling albums of the decade with Everything Changes and Greatest Hits. They split in 1996 and returned in 2005 as a four man band. The album cover above is not the image they were sending out back in the 1990's, through there music videos i will show the change in them and the sucess it bought.

Do What You Like

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pHnqmw9QRM

One of there first music videos and was very low budget. Like other boybands in the 1990's there were first bought into the music world by selling themselves as gay icons, which can be seen through this video. The video is them getting naked and putting jelly on themselves, it was banned from daytime tele and now days is normally always mention is the top 10 of worst videos ever made. However it got some puplicity and there names were out in the show biz world.

There breakthrough single was a cover of the 1970s Tavares It Only Take A Minute.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9RUgfqS1Ps

The music video shows the band at a boxing ring, Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams are outside the ring looking at a girl and trying to catch her attention. The other three members are in the boxing ring doing the dance routine and also backflips and break-dancing. Throughout the video the members of the band are shown using the gym and boxing, this shows them more masculine in comparision the the previous video. This song got them into the top 10.

A Million Love Songs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X0IdnkLNLo

A Million Love Songs is Gary Barlow song, he wrote it when he was 15 and realesed it with Take That which went to number 7 in the charts. The music video is mostly black and white with water colour effect to make it blury. The saxaphone is the main instrument played by Mike Stevens and himself has become famous because of this song. At Take That concerts Mike does an extended version of the saxaphone piece. The other four members are very much backing singers in this song and in the video you can see them paired of to sing the "oo's" and the "yeahs".

Relight My Fire

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWPUespcblU

"Relight My Fire" was revived in 1993 by Take That and featured guest vocals from LuLu reprising the Holloway role. The second of the band's eleven number-one hits, it topped the UK singles chart for two weeks in October 1993.The video starts with two people opening the doors to the club, the band then walk in, and through all the people in the club. The group is then shown throughout performing the song. When Lulu's section comes in she is first shown dancing in the club and singing. Then the band and Lulu sing the song together on the stage till the end of the song. The video finishes with the band being the last to leave the club when everyone else has gone It more upbeat to Million love Song and shows that Take That dont want to be seen as a slow band.

Back For Good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMSUnEOPY5I

Written by Gary Barlow, who also sang the lead vocal on the track, it was their sixth UK chart-topper, and their only US top ten hitentered the UK singles chart at number one, selling 300,000 copies in its first week. It remained at number one for four weeks, and eventually sold 965,000 copies. A music video was released to promote this song. The video was shot in black and white. The group at the start are running through the rain and into a hut. Jason is playing the guitar and the others are sat around singing the song. Towards the end of the video the group sing the song and dance in the rain, with the cars in the background.

Never Forget.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NETAkSTzIu8

The music video starts with fans dashing through gates at a concert towards the stage and security guards patroling to contain the crowds. The video then shows short clips of all the members of the band as children, before then showing still photographs of the members as children. The video shows a montage of the bands history including awards won, Gary accepting an award from Elton John, meeting Prince Charles and their international fans. The video cuts between footage on a hand held camera of the band starting out and them in the present day. The video shows clips of earlier videos and before they were famous TV appearances, as well as early rehearsal footage. The video also shows how their lives have changed with barrage of fans everywhere they go and international plane journeys, as well as concert footage. The video ends with the band heading off after a concert in a van and then a clip of Gary as a child riding away on his trike. This was one of there last songs in the 1990's. Once Robbie Williams left they carried on there tour but they did there last show in Amsterdam.

The comeback!
"On may 06, Take That came back to the recorded music scene after more than ten years, signing with Polydor Records in a deal reportedly worth 3 million pounds. The band's comeback album Beautiful World entered the UK album chart at no.1 and, as of June 2009, has sold over 2.6 million copies in the U.K. It is currently the 35th best selling album in UK music history.Unlike the band's earlier works, where the majority of their material was written by Gary Barlow, all songs are co-written by the band members. The come-back single Patience was released on November 06, with a special event launching it on 5th November ( bomfire night) On 26 November Patience hit number 1 in the UK in its second week of chart entry making it the group's 9th No.1. The video for Shine, the follow-up to Patience was premiered on 25th January 07 on Channel 4, ahead of its release on 26 January 07."

Shine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcBGLUfmtdg

One of there comeback singles and you can tell that there image has changed. They are all dressed smartly now and mark is doing the lead vocals. There music video is shiny - to reflect the name and glossy. Its a fun song and again showing a different side to them in comparison to Patience there previous single. This song has been used in the media for example it was/is the song for morrisons.

Rule The World.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8ClzqUq9kg

The music video was directed by Barney Clay and filmed at Abbey Road studios It shows the band and the orchestra at the studios performing the song with excerpts shown from the movie, Stardust. It premiered on ITV on 22 September 2007. Take That comeback has allowed there music to be cross media- used in advert and films. This is more recontion for them.

Up All Night

From the new album The Circus. The lead vocal by Mark, the video is in the style of a street party.
